Machine Tool Commissioning Engineer (Posted 19/2/19)

Excellent role on offer for an experienced Machine Tool Commissioning Engineer.

Due to our continued success and growth, we are looking to plan for the future and strengthen our capabilities within the machine commissioning area of the business. We are looking for a smart and driven Commissioning engineer with the confidence, ability & initiative to act as a key resource in this area.

The role requires a capable hands-on engineer to be able to commission, fault find & resolve issues with our machinery & ancillary equipment. Although we envisage the role to be primarily based at our Colchester site, we have a worldwide customer base, therefore UK and international travel may be required, sometimes at short notice.

The position is multidiscipline and includes both mechanical and electrical roles. It is expected you would have proven experience in the mechanical side of automated machinery with a working knowledge of the electrical side.  This is a varied yet challenging role which would ideally suit someone who is looking for the chance to use their machine tool experience within a specialist team and progress their career.  This role would be a natural lead into further progression within an installation and commissioning role.


Commissioning of our machines and ancillary equipment.

To prepare machines and ancillary equipment for internal trials and customer MQ1.

To assist with customer trials and MQ1 when required to do so.

To complete and update machine functionality checks and test sheets prior to customer MQ1 or the machine being despatched, highlighting any issues to line management.

To be able to troubleshoot machine issues in order to resolve any problems.

To produce relevant machine commissioning and test reports as required to our company standard.

To identify any changes made to the machines or ancillary equipment during the commissioning phase, recording and communicating these to line management either verbally or in the site report.

To assist with the inspection of components, e.g. from MQ1 trials, when required to do so.

When not actively involved in machine commissioning, to work flexibly in the assembly / process engineering areas of the business.

To assist with machine commissioning (MQ2) or installation requirements at the customer’s site, both UK and worldwide.

Work in accordance with company & customer Health & Safety procedures, bringing any issues to the attention of line management.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Time served engineer with experience gained in mechanical engineering.
  • Working knowledge of electrical engineering and fault finding on PLC and 3 phase systems
  • Knowledge of cylindrical grinding would be beneficial, however the right applicant would receive full training on how to run a CNC grinding machine.
  • Knowledge of N/C programming would be advantageous, however the right applicant would receive full training in how to write and test basic machine cycles.
  • An understanding of PLC would be beneficial.
  • Understanding of Health & Safety and other regulatory requirements with the ability to comply with business processes.
  • Highly effective written & verbal communications
  • Methodical approach to problem solving
